The current overwhelming levels of unemployment, poverty, and a failed education / school system in rural communities combined with the reality of the Climate Crisis are issues that are front and centre and unavoidable in our new national and global reality. During a PRE-PANDEMIC informal meeting with a Mpumalanga Government official its was suggested that the provincial youth unemployment rate is as high as 89%. The 2016 Stats SA census has revealed that less than 20% of Emakhazeni citizens (across all ages) have completed their schooling.

Keeping this national and global reality in mind, alongside these staggering unemployment and education statistics, FATC @ Ebhudlweni Arts Centre has identified two critical statements: Problem Statements, which frame its work in A Education, A Production, A Activism and A for Social Justice Activities more broadly: Primary Problem Statement: Decades into Democracy, systemic inequalities continue to prevent many South Africans from living to their full potential. Approaching its 28th year, FATC’s purpose is to address critical issues and work towards supporting development that facilitates:

“Empowered active citizens, living to their full potential, bring about systemic change.”

Primary Problem Statement:
Decades into Democracy, systemic inequalities continue to prevent many South Africans from living to their full potential. Approaching its 28th year, and as part of FATC’s long term strategy, FATC’s purpose is to address these critical issues as we work towards contributing to a Long-term Impact that we have articulated as follows:
“Empowered active citizens, living to their full potential, bring about systemic change.”

Secondary Problem Statement:
There is little to no access to basic and tertiary A Education, A Training opportunities for individuals living in the rural areas of South Africa – spaces marked by geographic isolation, lack of transformation in socio-economic circumstances and a lack of resources.
